These strawberry peanut butter protein balls make the perfect healthy postpartum snack idea. They are extremely quick to make. Just a few simple ingredients that can be mixed together in no time at all. Simply pop them in the freezer and they will store for months. Pull them out whenever in need of a postpartum snack.

They are also perfect for the whole family. Add them to your kid’s lunchbox as a lunchtime snack. These strawberry peanut butter protein balls are nutrient dense, using freeze dried strawberries, nut butter and oat flour. They are refined sugar free. Containing both oats and peanut butter they are a great snack if you are trying to boost your milk supply. Make these strawberry peanut butter protein balls in bulk and store them in the freezer. You can pull them out for any occasion. These strawberry peanut butter protein balls look beautiful and taste even better.

Ingredients You Will Need For These Strawberry Peanut Butter Protein Balls

Here’s a look at the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Most of our ingredients are things you will likely already have in your fridge or pantry. Missing something? Don’t worry, we’ve suggested some ingredient swaps and tricks that might help. Don’t let one missing ingredient prevent you from making a delicious from-scratch meal, snack or dessert for your family.

  • Oat flour – This is simple to make if you don’t want to buy it pre-made. Just put the oats in a blender (I use a bullet blender) and pulse until you have a fine powder. For this recipe you will want to use about two cups of whole oats to make enough oat flour. The exact measurement will vary depending on the size of the oats that you are using.
  • Peanut butter – I use smooth. You will be fine to use crunchy, but the texture of the dough balls will be much coarser. You can substitute the peanut butter for any other type of nut butter or seed butter. If your butter of choice is thinner than peanut butter you may need to add an extra tablespoon of oat flour.
  • Coconut oil – This is the perfect oil for healthy dough balls. Liquid when heated. It solidifies at room temperature. This binds the dough balls and gives them a luscious texture.
  • Agave syrup – Is also called agave nectar. It is a naturally occurring sweetener very similar to maple syrup. It is extracted from the agave plant, which is grown primarily in Mexico. It is a vegan friendly alternative to honey. It has a much lower glycaemic index than granulated sugar (sucrose) as it is made of fructose and glucose. For this recipe you could swap agave syrup with either honey or maple syrup.
  • Vanilla bean paste – not to be confused with vanilla extract. Vanilla bean paste is ground vanilla beans which have been mixed with sugar. It is much thicker than and stronger in flavour than vanilla essence. Vanilla essence is vanilla bean which has been soaked in alcohol, infusing its flavour. While you can use vanilla essence instead of vanilla bean paste in this recipe, the flavour will be more subtle.
  • Freeze dried strawberry powder – Light and fine in texture. This powder is packed with flavour, colour and nutrients. Unlike dehydrated foods, the freeze-dried method supposedly preserves more of the nutrients of the food. The freeze-drying process involves freezing the food, then removing the ice and moisture in a vacuum. Strawberries fall onto the ‘dirty dozen’ food list. This is a list made by the Environmental Working Group, identifying fresh produce with the highest residue of pesticides. Therefore, wherever possible I recommend buying organic freeze-dried strawberry powder. I bought mine from Whole Forest Foods.

Our recipes rarely require any fancy tools. We don’t use a microwave to heat our food, so everything can be made either on the hob or in the oven. (Or in an Instant Pot if you have one!) Conversions for gas, electric, fan and Celsius and Fahrenheit are included in each recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions For These Strawberry Peanut Butter Protein Balls

If not using oat flour, blend the oats first to a fine powder. You will probably need about 2 cups of oats depending on the size of the oats you are using.
If not already melted, melt your coconut oil on the hob or in the microwave.
Add all ingredients to a large bowl and stir well to combine.
Using a tablespoon measure scoop out one heaped tablespoon at a time. Roll between the palm of your hands to create a smooth ball.
Add an extra tablespoon of freeze dried strawberry powder to a small bowl. Lightly coat each peanut butter protein ball in the strawberry powder.
Place on a freezer safe tray and freeze until solid. Store in an airtight contained in the freezer or fridge. Allow to thaw a little before eating. Enjoy!

Tips For Success These Strawberry Peanut Butter Protein Balls

  • Tip 1 – If making your own oat flour pulse the oats rather than leaving on a long blend. If the oats over heat they can become sticky. Pulse a little at a time until you achieve a fine powder.
  • Tip 2 – Allow the balls to thaw a little before consuming if you prefer a softer consistency.
  • Tip 3 – Use a tablespoon measure to achieve evenly sized dough balls.

Instructions

  • Add 1 1/4 cup of oat flour to a large bowl.
  • Add 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter to the same bowl.
  • Add 1/4 cup of melted coconut oil to the bowl.
  • Add 1/4 cup of agave syrup to the bowl.
  • Add 1 tsp of vanilla paste to the bowl.
  • Add 2 tbsp of freeze dried strawberry powder to the bowl.
  • Stir well to combine.
  • Using the tbsp measure scoop 1tbsp the mixture at a time, and using your hands form dough balls.
  • Add 1 tbsp of freeze dried strawberry powder to a small bowl.
  • Roll each dough ball in the powder, lightly coating the outside. Shake off any excess.
  • Place on a tray and freeze overnight.
  • Store in a freezer safe container.
  • Simply remove from freezer and eat when soft enough for your preference. They keep very well in lunchboxes.
